CHAPTER 18

Friday, April 25

Friday began another beautiful sunny day. The garden center was humming. Glorious days always made for good sales. No one wanted to even think about planting when the weather was cold and nasty.

Marilee returned to her office to refill her coffee cup and headed back outside to take a moment to enjoy the day. Customers were making the best of it, and the selection of plants was at its peak. In the garden center, petunias, African daisies, begonias and impatiens were overflowing the benches. For those who liked to create their own hanging baskets, an abundant supply of trailing annuals burst from their tiny cell packs. White-flowering bacopa, green or eggplant-colored potato vine, asparagus fern and seed geraniums were some of the favorites for hanging baskets.

On the perennial tables, some plants were in full bloom. There, an array of rose-colored perennial bleeding heart, white Dutchman’s Breeches, pink wispy gaura, purple peach-leaved bellflowers, pale pink musk mallow, assorted calla lilies, liatris and lavender-colored Russian sage flowered in a enticing mixture of scents and shades.

As she watched the shoppers roaming the aisles with their carts and flat-bed trolleys, she realized another good thing about running a garden center: the customers were always happy. Maybe every once in a while you were faced with a grumpy customer, unhappy that a plant had not made it through the winter, or complaining that some aspect of a landscaping project that had not turned out as expected. But overall, they were a contented lot, she thought as she leaned against a pillar gazing across the perennial lots and inhaling the intoxicating, aroma of fresh coffee laced with the scent of lemon thyme that floated up from nearby herbs.
